Games & Gatherings
1. Dungeons & Dragons
When a group of people gather around a table to play Dungeons & Dragons, they are not just slaying dragons. They are rehearsing identity, belonging, courage, rebellion, loyalty, and sometimes grief, all disguised as dice rolls and spell slots.
Our Dungeon Masters who run our sessions are all long term DnD players themselves. They have working with children’s checks and police checks. They have all undergone training on supporting young people during campaigns and will have ongoing collaboration together as out DnD program rolls out.
For young people struggling to find connection or an activity with a little difference, DnD can be a real gift to their social, mental and creative growth. Some skills impacted by DnD include:
-
Executive functioning- planning ahead, managing your resources, switching between listening, calculating and acting, waiting when its not your turn.
-
Communication- explain ideas clearly, persuade and negotiate, active listening, reading social cues and tone
-
Collaboration- support teammates, share spotlight, compromise on plans and manage disagreements
-
Emotional intelligence- understanding motives, perspective-taking, regulating reactions and handling disappointment
-
Problem solving- creative thinking, strategic situation analysis, risk assessments, pros/cons, adaptive thinking
-
Literacy & numeracy- reading comprehension, vocabulary, narrative structure, numeracy and probability and mental math
-
Identity development- exploration of personality traits, experimenting with leadership, testing morals and values, building confidence.
-
Frustration tolerance- accepting uncertainty, cope with setbacks, recover after mistakes
-
Story telling and creativity- imagination, descriptive language, improvisation and narrative cohesion
-
Decision making and control- every decision leads to an outcome that is their own “What do you do?”
How does it work?
DnD sessions go by terms and are run fortnightly, 5 sessions per term of three hours each. Sessions are conducted in different buildings depending on where our DnD Dungeon Masters are situated but aim to be consistent across the term.
Each group will be capped at 5 people to ensure active game play for everyone.
